Description

Overview Tumbler American 1830–35 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774 This tumbler belongs to a set of nine known tumblers, each engraved with a notable Philadelphia Building. The landmarks were copied from the drawings of Charles Strickland in C. G. Child's "Engravings of Philadelphia and Its Environs," published between 1827 and 1830. The engraving on this tumbler, depicting the Bank of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia was probably made on a Bohemian glass blank, perhaps at the Union Flint Glass Works, or more probably, by an independent decorator working in Philadelphia.
