Description

Overview Tumbler Bakewell, Page & Bakewell American 1825–30 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 704 The greyhound was a popular motif on French glass of the early nineteenth century. One visitor to the Bakewell factory in 1828 admired the Pittsburgh version, observing that, “though it was not an inch in length, [the greyhound] was perfect and entire.” The two hearts on a pedestal, another French element, suggest that such tumblers were given as tokens of affection.
