Description

Overview Tumbler Philip Goelet American ca. 1735 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774 According to the donor, this tumbler originally belonged to Tryntje Nancy Whittaker, whose initials appear on its side. At the time of the Revolution it belonged to her granddaughter in Kingston. When the town was burned by British forces in 1777, the tumbler was thrown into a well on the premises in order to keep it out of enemy hands. After the rebuilding of the town, a slave of the family was sent down in the well to recover the lost silver. In digging, his shovel struck the tumbler, making a cut on its side. This break has been repaired.
