Description

Overview Vase John Bennett American 1878 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774 This vase features underglaze decoration of stylized flowers and leaves. Its palette, overall design and shape mimic 14th and 15th-century Isnik pottery that had profoundly influenced English Arts and Crafts potter William De Morgan (1839–1917). Bennett’s two-dimensional treatment of design reflects the influence of the English Reform Movement that formed one of the underlying principles of the Aesthetic Movement in the United States. For other examples of Bennett's work, see 1983.262, 1984.425, and 1985.168.
