Description

Overview Vase Chelsea Keramic Art Works American 1876–80 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774 This square vase with its glossy olive green glaze is decorated with molded daisies, and two molded and applied frogs. Its shape is adapted from a Japanese brush pot. This vase and two other vases by this pottery in the collection (69.35 and 69.38.1) combine western decoration with Asian forms. Most likely, the Robertsons were inspired to copy Japanese and Chinese shapes after viewing objects from Japan and China at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. For additional examples made by the pottery see 69.35, 69.38.1, 1982.440.1–.4, L.1983.52, and 1992.231.
