Description

Overview Waste Bowl Andrew Ellicott Warner American 1845 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774 This waste bowl belongs to a tea and coffee service containing nine pieces. Decoration in relief covering the whole surface of an object was popular in Baltimore from the 1830s to the end of the century. Here, the rich repoussé ornament features chinoiserie scenes. The shapes of the teapots and the sugar bowl, unusual in silver, were copied from Chinese export porcelain forms of the early 1800s. The service was made for James Hamilton Wilson of Baltimore in 1845, the year he married. The coat of arms is that of the Hamilton family.
